Hotel Deo Bagh – 17th Century Heritage Hotel in Gwalior
Immerse yourself in the rich history and serene beauty of Deo Bagh, a 17th-century heritage hotel in Gwalior, now a proud gem of Neemrana Hotels. Nestled in the heart of a historic “char bagh” where Mughal emperors once camped, this exquisite property invites you to awaken the past while enjoying modern comforts.
History & Philosophy:
Deo Bagh’s legacy dates back to the late 1500s when prominent Mughals camped in this “char bagh,” featuring a stunning 36-pillared pavilion at its center. This area, with its moat of water, provided a cool refuge for women in underground chambers. Later, the Jadhav family, as part of the Maratha army, took possession of this natural oasis, transforming it into a summer retreat. Sardar Deorao Bhausaheb Jadhav and his son Sardar Krishnarao Deorao Jadhav utilized Deo Bagh as a summer house, with the ladies’ section at Deo Bagh and the men’s section at Jai Vihar.
Heritage Features:
The garden complex of Deo Bagh is adorned with exquisite family temples, a ‘hathi khana’ for elephants, stables, and cenotaphs. This historic site was a strategic meeting place for the Gwalior State, especially during the valiant battles against the British, with the Rani of Jhansi fighting from nearby fort ramparts. Post-independence, Deo Bagh became the residence of Sardar Deorao Krishnarao Jadhav and his family, until it opened its doors as a heritage hotel in April 2012.
Accommodations:
Deo Bagh offers 15 rooms spread across five wings, all facing a beautiful Nau Bagh garden. The rooms, named after the historical connections of the Jadhav family, include 3 suites and 12 rooms. Each room has a private bathroom, daily housekeeping, and essential amenities while maintaining a heritage charm by avoiding common practices like televisions and room service.
Dining:
The on-site restaurant serves a delightful mix of North Indian and Continental cuisines, with special Maratha dishes on request. Meals are served in the 17th-century Zenana wing, which also doubles as a conference hall. The fresh, locally sourced ingredients ensure a gourmet experience.
Events & Activities:
Deo Bagh is a perfect venue for intimate weddings, conferences, and special occasions. Its private and historic setting offers a magical ambiance for memorable events. The extensive gardens and historical structures provide a unique backdrop for both indoor and outdoor events.
Nearby Attractions:
Deo Bagh’s prime location near Gwalior Fort and the Gwalior railway station makes it an ideal base for exploring local attractions like Camel Valley, Girisagar Waterfall, Dhamma Giri Meditation Centre, Bhavali Dam, and more. The hotel also offers bird watching opportunities and a chance to explore the rich flora and fauna of its 25-acre campus.
